Tips and Tricks #4- Have more than ONE players handbook.

The book you will use the most eill be a players handbook. Each player reads it to level up and if you have a large party that means passing thr book around for a long time. Also spellcasters often need to check the book to see what their spells do while playing which is tedious especially if more than one person needs to do this. The easy solution is to buy a second or third players handbook or encourage players to bring their own. However these books are expensive and it is often not fessible to have more than 1 or 2 books even in a large party. You also could use online sources. There are often databases that tell you spell damage and this information could be printed off or otherwise referenced instead. Also if you are playing an older edition pdfs are often easily found online. People could view these on computers and tablets and this makes things easier for playing a non base class aswell. The DM could also print out or photocopy useful chsrts or tables to help speed up the leveling process aswell. Not having a secondary way to access player info is tedious so I would suggest to duplicste the info in some shape or form to facilitate more stress free gameplay.

Epic Moments #1

My samurai character went into a duel with a serial killer whom was killing people with a katana. We braced ourselves for an epic duel. I rolled a critical meaning i attacked his wound point directly. In addition to that I got to roll for extra damage from my winning initiative and making a Iaijutsu Strike. The guy died in one stike of the sword. And that was the end of his murdering streak.

Top 5s – D&D Book Cover

The look of these covers are very important to people who collect the books, as well as to create visual interest for consumers in stores. For me, my favorite are all in the earlier editions (3.5, basic and the 2 editions of ad&d). Here is a list of some of my favortites.

1. 1st edition of ad&d monster manual.

image

This cover looks almost as if it’s painted and the illustrations look kind of goofy which adds to its charm.

2. Players Handbook 3.5

image

I love how this books looks like some sort on mystical manuscript, like something you would find in the actual game.

3. Basic Dunegons and Dragons.

image

I think this book sums up the conent of the game. It shows a wizard and an archer fighting a dragon in a dungeon. It is a perfect description of the game summed up in a singel colourful image.

4. 2nd edition of ad&d dungeons master guide.

image

This cover looks more epic and dramatic than the others depicted on this list. This helps to illustrate the grand scale that dnd adventures can reach.

5. Monster Manuel 5 from 3.5

image

This cover is just cool. The cthulu like beast in this ornate book looks as if it could be an epic item/book you could find in the game’s world itself.

Tips and Tricks #3 – Paying Attention

If your players aren’t paying attention and it’s holding up the game, here’s a little trick you can use. All of a sudden just say their name and 50 or 100 damage (which ever is more dramatic)  and their heads should snap up, they’ll say ‘what’ and now you have their attention.  Its more trick than a tip…
Just be creative, encourage preparing turns in advance (so people aren’t just waiting around while others have their turn), and have a player keep track of whose turn it is. This will help the game run faster as well as smoother.

If you want to play dnd but you dont know where to start… read the players handbook. Its as easy as that.

Tips and Tricks – #2 DnD Rations

Its important to have food at a dnd game. Buying snacks and cooking is cheaper than ordering in. However, you most likey will order a pizza or two which is fine especially if you meet infrequently. However, this can get expensive for the host if it’s always the same person’s house you’re going to. Having people chip in (no pun intended) for pizza as well as the pop and chips goes a long way to take the strain off the host. But it’s important for first time hosts to know that they should have some snacks and drinks. My advice: think ahead on how you will feed your group. People get hungry and people have more fun when they are well fed.

Online Resources: Alignment

I just found this really cool resource that Wizards of the Coast published on their website. It’s a quiz to help determine your chracter’s alignment. Alignment is one of the hardest aspects of the game for people to grasp and roleplay properly. I myself never know and just explain my character’s personality and go based on that. However, now with this new tool I think determining alignment and sticking to it while roleplaying will be much easier and more comprehensive for players and dms alike!
